Sustainable Cities & Communities

Can we make a smile visible?

In 2017, Bogna Grazyna Jaroslawski, alongside Each One Teach One, Hip Hop Education South Africa, and Greatmore Studios Woodstock, embarked on the «Art & Culture make the world go round» project in Cape Town, South Africa. With support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, they focused on SDGs 11 of Agenda 2030.

Social Sculpture Process

A key outcome was «Smile,» a project capturing laughter’s power on paper. Jaroslawski used food coloring, and the local «brothers and sisters from the streets» blew colored water onto bread paper bags, creating vibrant patterns. Post-creation, the artworks were enriched with graphics inspired by Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s largest townships, and adorned with pieces of 23-carat ducat gold leaf, thus elevating the creations to the status of art.
The Process

The Streets of Woodstock

The project culminated in an exhibition at Greatmore Studios art gallery, where the «brothers and sisters» were invited, challenging societal power hierarchies and providing recognition to these artists, introducing their work to a wider audience. SGD GOAL 11

Sustainable Cites & Communities

Art and Culture Make the World Go Round advances SDG 11 by implementing cultural participation as a core element of sustainable urban development. Through a participatory artistic process, people experiencing homelessness were positioned as active contributors within Cape Town’s cultural landscape. Access to gallery space as part of the city’s cultural infrastructure was opened, social hierarchies were critically addressed, and artistic recognition was made possible. The project strengthens social cohesion, inclusion, and the right to participate in urban life.
