Sustainability in Refugee-Camps

Restore Cultural Heritage of Community Space

In 2004, Aurélie Maestre, in partnership with Spanish and Palestinian NGOs, embarked on the «En el desierto sin tierra una respuesta solidaria» («In the landless desert a response of solidarity»), a project at Sahrawi camps in Algeria’s southwest Sahara. In place, the community leader requested A. Maestre to restore their community space portraying their cultural heritage artistically.

The Transformative Powers of Social Sculpture

To transform that room, one of the few solid structures of the camps, she decided to incorporate paintings of traditional Sahrawi textile motifs. Assisted by a team of 15 volunteers, set about bringing this vision to life, working with local materials such as whitewash and pigments available in the area.

The transformative impact of this art project spread throughout the Saharawi camps, boosted their cultural identity, and ended with a grand potluck dinner, symbolizing their unity and shared heritage.
