Why Burning Compost?
Leaves, paper, words. A year long cycle made visible through 54 pieces
Leaves that fall from the trees in Berlin are mostly “cleaned up” and increasingly used in biogas plants where they are burned to produce electricity for our uses. This process of burning disrupts an essential ecological cycle that remains invisible to most of us in urban environments made of concrete. Usually, the falling of leaves in autumn is nature’s method of protection and preparation for spring. The leaves mulch and protect the soil over winter, and decompose into valuable micronutrients that feed our plants and trees in the spring.
Compost is nature’s treasure. Removing leaves and burning this valuable resource for our human needs, echoes the invisibilization of domestic labour (represented by paper bags used to prep and store food) that makes women disproportionately vulnerable to the consequences of climate change.

The disproportionate impact of climate change across genders
For the social sculpture, we gather and preserve leaves which have fallen locally in Berlin, and we invite participants to burn parts of the paper bags, leaves, as well as their own words, in order to make visible the interconnected processes of burning:
- burning of valuable compost
- climate change induced wildfires across the globe
- and the ashes of knowledge and local experiences of individuals whose stories are never heard
Impact assessment framework
We aim to create a total of 365 artworks for the final sculpture, to represent nature’s annual cycle. So far participants have created 54 works at a conference at the ESPC school in Berlin past November. The Padlet displays our first attempt to collect voices, questions and experiences on the topic on Climate Change and Gender Equality.
