When violence hides behind screens

Violence against women is often associated with visible injuries, silence, and shame. But today, violence also takes digital forms. It circulates through messages, images, surveillance, exposure, and repeated intrusion into everyday life. What appears immaterial can have lasting emotional, social, and physical consequences. Across Europe, digital violence against women is now increasingly recognized as a central dimension of gender based violence.
Between concealment and exposure

Hiding Behind Flowers confronts this shift

Flowers are a non verbal language. They can express affection, apology, gratitude, or grief without words. Because of their fragility, they also symbolize protection and peaceful resistance. In this project, flowers become a paradoxical image. They represent beauty, but also concealment. They speak softly, while covering what is difficult to say.

What can be done to make the invisible visible​

Through an anonymous digital platform, women are invited to share experiences of violence in a protected way. The project recognizes that the tension between violence, shame, power, and exposure often determines whether someone can speak at all. Anonymity is not used here to erase identity, but to create the conditions for expression.
The collected testimonies are transformed into an artistic language in which flowers become carriers of experience. What hides behind them is not decorative. It is social reality. Hiding Behind Flowers creates a space where invisible violence can be approached without forcing self exposure, and where private experiences can enter collective awareness with care and dignity.

Hiding Behind Flowers creates a protected framework in which women can share experiences anonymously through our Padlet. Their words are gathered without names and without exposure, so anonymity becomes a condition for trust and agency. These testimonies are translated into artistic form, turning flowers into carriers of stories and making hidden realities visible without forcing personal disclosure. To realise this work with depth and care, we are seeking strong partners and institutional allies who want to support protected participation, public visibility, and lasting social impact.

Collective Art in Public Space

Educational process addressing structural violence against women

In October 2025, Masterpiece for Good began Pink Silence Avignon together with art students from Lycées St Joseph and Vincent de Paul in Avignon. As part of the ongoing Pink Silence series, the project focuses on violence against women and children through a process based on education, participation, and artistic work over time.
Across four social sculpture workshops, students worked with research, anonymous testimonies of domestic violence, and collective making. This process led to seven public installations and a series of visual materials, presented on 8 March 2026 for International Women’s Day in the schools and across the city.

Process and Method

Throughout the process, we regularly checked in with the group to understand how participants experienced the project and the anonymous format. This allowed for more honest reflection. Using a structured method, the students worked through social, emotional, and spatial aspects of the topic and developed seven social sculptures. The project was shaped by safe working conditions, critical thinking, and shared authorship.

Padlet to collect data

To Measure Impact

Over several months, 54 students took part in workshops that combined research, discussion, and artistic practice. To make it possible for many people to contribute, we used Padlet as a shared space to collect thoughts, experiences, and stories.
These contributions were part of the process from the beginning. They informed the themes, influenced the decisions made in the workshops, and were gradually translated into artistic forms. In this way, the project developed step by step through a collective process in which reflection and making were closely connected.

Vernissage on Intern. Women's Day

A youth led public parcours

In cooperation with both schools and with the support of the City of Avignon, the installations will be handed over to the city as part of International Women’s Day. Nearly 80 young participants will be present across Avignon to host the parcours, care for the works, activate them on site, and guide visitors through the installations. The aim is to create an open, respectful dialogue in public space.

Turning distance into dialogue

Creativity Delivered by Post

In 2010, Aurélie Maestre carried forward her personal project named «Art toys». She organized this new initiative to stimulate creativity from everyday materials and to emphasize the transformative potential of art.
Maestre developed a ‘toolbox’ containing simple objects and construction materials, which she mailed to 10 acquaintances she had met during her travels in Europe.

These individuals were not necessarily artists but they shared a common enthusiasm for creative expression. Each participant fashioned their unique art toy from the kit. The result was an array of a variety of art forms, each showcasing the ingenuity of its creator and demonstrating that art could be born out of any material, even discarded items.

Seeing Together

Ten years of everyday beauty, resilience, and collective gaze

During 5 months each year between 2010 and 2021, Aurélie Maestre ran the annual project «Les 28 yeux». She sought to bring out the creative vision in everyday people, this time focusing on an open group of acquaintances from all Europe, not necessarily connected with the art world.

In line with her approach, Maestre launched a photo contest where participants were invited to send a picture each month on a specific theme. Regardless of whether they used a professional camera or a cell-phone, what mattered was their perseverance.

Over 40 individuals partook in this artistic journey over the ten-year span, developing a keen eye for the beauty in their daily lives. During the Covid lockdown, the rhythm intensified to a photo per day, providing a comforting routine that helped the participants feel less isolated.

In 2021, the best pictures from the decade-long project were exhibited in Marseille and Apt (France), providing a tangible record of the resilience and creativity that had been nurtured through this enduring initiative.
